Heart Blood Deficiency

Blood deficiency in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM for short) is a broader term than simply anemia. Like Yin, Blood in TCM refers to the body 's overall fluids and nourishment. A diagnosis of Heart Blood deficiency means that this aspect of the Heart organ network is compromised.

Lifestyle Recommendations

Calming and resting the mind and body are important for restoring proper nourishment to the Heart Organ Network.

Beneficial activities:

  • Restorative exercises such as Taiji (Tai Chi), Qigong, and Yoga are recommended.
  • Practices to reduce over stimulation, such as meditation, Qigong, deep breathing programs, etc. should be done on a continuous basis to calm and still the mind.
  • Avoid activities and environments that result in excessive perspiration.
  • Avoid eye strain and be sure to regularly gaze into the far distance to relax the eyes and mind.
  • Adequate sleep (7 - 8 or more hours) and rest is required for the body to cultivate Heart Blood.
  • Since insomnia is often a feature of this pattern, consistent end of day routines are important to help unwind.
  • Avoid an irregular sleep schedule since this can disrupt your body's normal day/night cycle. Don't vary the time you get up at the start of the day. Unlike falling asleep, the time you get up is easier to keep consistent and over time will help restore a disrupted wake/sleep schedule.
  • Regular self-massage of the temples and scalp will help to calm the mind and rebalance a hyperactive nervous system.
  • Counselling and other forms of talk therapy can be helpful for addressing emotional issues.
